Imported Electricity and Mobile Resilience Hubs

According to Novyny.live: To alleviate pressure on Ukraine's power system during a severe cold snap, Ukrzaliznytsia has begun importing electricity. This initiative follows directives from the Emergency Energy Situation Response Staff, with plans for imports to cover half of the railway's consumption throughout the winter months. This move is crucial for maintaining a stable power supply as demand surges during freezing weather. Ukraine's energy infrastructure remains under immense strain due to the ongoing war, making such measures vital for national resilience.

Alongside securing power, the railway operator is supporting passengers with 16 mobile "resilience hubs" that have already assisted over 5,000 people since January 10. Across the country's stations, the following facilities are operational:

  • 97 stationary resilience hubs, which have welcomed more than 400,000 visitors since the start of winter.
  • During the intense cold period beginning January 9, 2026, these hubs have provided shelter for nearly 150,000 individuals.

Demonstrating preparedness for frontline regions, Ukrzaliznytsia has also readied approximately 100 railcars for deployment to various Ukrainian oblasts. These combined actions aim to ensure passenger safety and comfort amid extreme weather conditions.

The import of electricity and the activation of mobile resilience centers highlight the concerted efforts by Ukrainian authorities and Ukrzaliznytsia to stabilize the energy system and support the population during harsh winter frosts.

These steps underscore the critical importance of preparedness for extreme situations, particularly within the context of the protracted war and climate-related challenges. Given the heightened electricity consumption in cold periods, energy imports represent a key tool for bolstering the country's energy security.
