Rail Services to Zaporizhzhia Suspended

According to Novyny.live: Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway operator, will temporarily suspend all passenger rail routes to and from Zaporizhzhia starting February 19, 2023. This decision is a direct response to the deteriorating security situation along the railway lines in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, where daily enemy shelling targets the tracks and stations. The ongoing full-scale invasion has made railway infrastructure a repeated target, disrupting critical civilian transport.

The suspension is due to persistent attacks on rail infrastructure, which pose a significant danger to passengers and equipment. Consequently, several trains will now be redirected to terminate or originate their journeys in the city of Dnipro, which lies further north and is considered a safer logistical hub.

Ukrzaliznytsia stated: 'Due to prolonged and regular enemy shelling of railway infrastructure on the Zaporizhzhia route, movement for some trains to/from Zaporizhzhia will be temporarily restricted from February 19, with certain services shortened to/from Dnipro.'

Current Operational Context

This measure was deemed necessary because of the operational realities that have developed in Zaporizhzhia Oblast since the beginning of 2023. Given these new circumstances, Ukrzaliznytsia advises passengers to remain vigilant and monitor updates regarding train schedules and potential further route alterations.

The cancellation of services to Zaporizhzhia underscores the escalating security crisis in the region, driven by intense combat operations. This will impact population mobility and regional logistics overall, as Zaporizhzhia is a key transportation nexus. Ukrzaliznytsia will continue to monitor the situation and take steps to ensure passenger safety and preserve infrastructure.
