Ukrzaliznytsia's New Women-Only Train Compartments Draw Criticism Over Higher Fares.
Ukrzaliznytsia Launches Women-Only Compartments
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine's state railway operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, has introduced women-only sleeping compartments on select routes, a move that has sparked public debate. The initiative, intended to improve travel comfort and safety for women, has faced criticism due to the higher ticket prices for these spaces. For instance, a ticket for a women-only compartment on the Zaporizhzhia to Yasinya route costs 582 hryvnias, compared to 299 hryvnias for a standard ticket. The company clarifies that pricing is based on the type of carriage and its amenities, not the passenger's gender. This pricing model is common for premium services in other European rail systems.
Ticket Availability and Passenger Rights
Separately, on routes to the Zakarpattia region, a portion of seats is reserved for state needs, which can affect overall ticket availability for regular passengers. Additionally, passengers should be aware that those with upper berth tickets do not have the right to occupy the space under the lower berth without the consent of the passenger who purchased the lower berth ticket.
Consequently, the introduction of women-only compartments has become a controversial innovation, primarily due to its pricing policy.
While the new compartments are part of efforts to enhance travel conditions for women, the accompanying fare increase has caused concern among passengers. This decision requires further review to ensure a balance between safety, comfort, and affordability for all passenger groups. In the future, Ukrzaliznytsia may reconsider its pricing strategy to better meet consumer demands and address the criticism.
