Ukraine’s Cabinet Terminates 116 Agreements with Russia, Belarus, and the CIS.
A Major Shift in Ukraine's International Commitments
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Cabinet of Ministers has decided to terminate, denounce, or withdraw from 116 international agreements involving Russia, Belarus, and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). This move is part of a broader strategy to strengthen the nation’s sovereignty amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Specifically, 25 agreements will cease to be in effect, while three others will be formally denounced. The breakdown of the 116 agreements slated for termination is as follows:
- five were signed with Russia;
- 23 with Belarus;
- 87 under the CIS framework.
A key driver of this process was a presidential decree issued on February 25, which mandated Ukraine’s exit from 31 CIS-related agreements. Additionally, 14 legislative bills have been registered in the Verkhovna Rada to terminate another 74 international treaties.
Minister Andrii Sybiha stated: 'It is my fundamental position as minister to eliminate anything that could weaken Ukraine.'
Through these actions, the Ukrainian government continues to implement policies aimed at reinforcing the country’s independence and territorial integrity in the face of modern challenges.
New Challenges and Foreign Policy Direction
This termination of international agreements marks a significant step in reshaping Ukraine’s foreign policy, with the goal of reducing the influence of states that pose a threat to national security.
The decision underscores Ukraine’s determination to bolster its position amid geopolitical pressures, particularly from Russia and its allies. By walking away from pacts that could limit its sovereignty, Ukraine is signaling a pivot toward new international partnerships and a focus on security in a volatile regional environment.
