The UK government warns of a new fraud scheme with payments: how to protect yourself.
Beware: a new fraud scheme with social payments
According to The Sun: Millions of people receiving social payments must be cautious due to a new fraudulent scheme that may threaten their bank accounts. The UK government has issued a warning for those receiving six types of social assistance, as they could be targeted by fraudsters.
AlamyThe Ministry of Energy Security and Net Zero has advised citizens to be vigilant in the coming months. Starting today, letters will be sent to applicants in the UK to inform them of their eligibility for a £150 discount on their electricity bills.
This funding will be provided to energy suppliers under the Warm Home Discount program, so the money will not be given directly to the applicants.
However, it should be remembered that fraudsters may try to take advantage of this situation.
Fraudsters may convince people that they need to apply for this program in order to receive money directly. As a result, instead of £150, they may trick people into revealing their bank details and steal their money.
“The Ministry of Energy Security and Net Zero strongly emphasizes that citizens should not apply for this program,”
At the same time, people are reminded that any text messages or emails regarding this scheme are fraudulent.
The ministry has reported instances of fraud where individuals are allegedly asked for their bank details, and urges not to engage with such messages.
Additionally, 2.7 million households will be able to benefit from the Warm Home Discount, totaling over six million households.
This benefit will be provided automatically, and no action is required to receive it. If you live in England or Wales and are the designated payer on the electricity bill, receiving one of the six types of social assistance, you will receive the Warm Home Discount in 2025/26.
Those receiving Housing Benefit, Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA), Income Support, Pension Credit, and Universal Credit can expect to benefit from this program.
Applicants in the UK will receive a letter and should wait for it. Letters will be sent out from mid-October, but may be received until December.
In the case of fraud, it is important to remain vigilant and always verify information through official channels. Citizens should remember that no institution will ask them to provide bank details through unverified messages. Protecting their funds should be a priority at a time when fraudulent schemes are becoming increasingly sophisticated.
