Usyk Vacates All Championship Belts: Why This Isn't the End of His Career.
Oleksandr Usyk's Decision
According to Espreso.tv: Oleksandr Usyk has announced he is relinquishing his titles to allow other fighters waiting for their shot to compete. He made it clear this does not mark the end of his career, stating:
'I am leaving the belts, but I am not leaving the sport. This is not the end of the story. The continuation lies ahead. Glory to God for everything! Glory to Ukraine!'
Victory over Rico Verhoeven
In May 2026, Usyk knocked out Dutch fighter Rico Verhoeven in Egypt, successfully defending his WBC, WBA, IBF, and The Ring heavyweight titles. That win marked the 25th victory of his undefeated career. In his statement, the boxer stressed the importance of giving other fighters a chance to compete for championships, saying:
'To make them free, so the guys waiting in line for them can box.'
This move by Usyk could significantly reshape the heavyweight division, as it opens the door for other boxers to vie for these prestigious titles. Many athletes aiming for the top in boxing may now get an opportunity to pursue their ambitions. By vacating his belts, Usyk shows a commitment to advancing the sport and supporting his rivals, which could foster greater competition and more exciting matchups in the future.
