Transgender women banned from participating in women's football teams in England.
The Football Association of England has announced that it is banning transgender women from participating in matches for women's teams. The decision was made following the UK Supreme Court's determination that a woman is someone born with female biology. The Football Association stated that it would review its policy regarding transgender individuals and would operate within the law and the policies of UEFA and FIFA.
The ban on transgender women participating in women's football in England will take effect from June 1, 2025. The Football Association will reach out to registered transgender women currently playing to explain the changes and how they can continue their participation in football.
This decision by the English Football Association is part of a global trend to restrict the participation of transgender athletes in women's teams. Recently, the White House suspended support for the University of Pennsylvania due to transgender swimmer Lia Thomas's participation in NCAA competitions. Additionally, former U.S. President Donald Trump also signed an order banning transgender athletes from competing with women. Similar bans are being implemented in other countries.
It is worth noting that in March, transgender referee Sapir Berman from Israel officiated an international women's national team match for the first time in football history. This was evidence of gradual progress in the acceptance of transgender athletes in the sporting community.
