Former Italian Intelligence Officers Arrested on Suspicion of Spying for Russia.
Two Ex-Intelligence Agents Detained in Italy
According to Espreso.tv: Italian authorities have arrested two former officers of the AISI domestic intelligence service, suspected of espionage on behalf of Russian security agencies. The suspects, Gavino Raul Piras and Vincenzo Di Pasquale, both aged 59, are at the center of an investigation that was launched in 2025. This case highlights ongoing concerns about foreign infiltration within Italian state institutions.
During searches conducted as part of the operation, law enforcement seized 20,000 euros in cash. In addition to the two former agents, five other individuals have been taken into custody, underscoring the scope of the probe. Italy’s Defense Minister, Guido Crosetto, responded to the situation by declaring a policy of
“zero tolerance”toward any actions that compromise national security.
Systemic Vulnerabilities and Security Risks
This incident underscores the serious threats Italy faces in safeguarding its security. The investigation remains ongoing, and further details regarding the case may be released in the near future.
The arrests of former intelligence personnel point to potential systemic weaknesses in Italy’s ability to protect state secrets from external adversaries. Amid heightened international tensions fueled by the war in Ukraine and increased activity by Russian intelligence services, Italian law enforcement has emphasized its readiness to counter any efforts to undermine national security. This case may prompt a reassessment of existing oversight and security protocols within the country.
