Deadly Confrontation in Odesa's Podilskyi District
According to Novyny.live: A routine traffic stop turned tragic in Odesa's Podilskyi district on July 5, when a moped rider detonated a grenade during an encounter with patrol police. The explosion wounded two law enforcement officers and fatally injured the 52-year-old man, who was reported as absent without leave (AWOL). He later died in the hospital from his injuries.
According to authorities, the man was pulled over for a traffic violation when he pulled out a grenade and threatened to use it. The blast caused severe injuries to both the rider and the two officers on duty. Emergency responders rushed the man to a hospital, where he succumbed to his wounds.
Investigation Underway
Law enforcement has launched a formal investigation into the incident. Investigators have opened criminal proceedings under multiple articles of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, including:
- Article 345 — threats or violence against a law enforcement officer;
- Article 263 — illegal handling of weapons and explosives;
- Article 115 with the note 'accident.'
The case is being overseen by the specialized prosecutor's office for defense matters in the Southern region.
This incident highlights the serious issue of illegal weapons possession in Ukraine and the dangers officers face on the job. The explosion in a public setting also raises concerns about the control of explosive materials and public safety.
