Cracks in Putin’s Inner Circle: Can Russia Sustain Its War Effort?.
Growing Discord Inside Russia
According to UATV: Disagreements among Russian President Vladimir Putin’s closest advisers over continuing the war in Ukraine are intensifying as mounting challenges hinder Moscow’s ability to fight. Since December 2022, Russian forces have suffered repeated setbacks on the battlefield, which analysts say points to a grim outlook for the military. A State Duma deputy recently highlighted deepening crisis symptoms within Russia, further fueling an atmosphere of uncertainty.
Ukraine’s Expanding Capabilities
Meanwhile, Ukraine is ramping up drone production and developing its own ballistic missile systems. Expert Dmitry Gudkov noted that
“Ukraine may soon produce long-range missiles and its own ballistic weapons”, a development that could significantly shift the balance of power. He also emphasized that
“Russia can no longer wage this war successfully with conventional means”and that “the situation at the front is not evolving in Russia’s favor.”
Additionally, Russia is grappling with a fuel crisis in its southern regions, complicating logistics and combat operations. Against this backdrop, discussions about the potential use of nuclear weapons have surfaced. Malafeyev stated that “nuclear arms represent the best scenario for Russia,” a remark that has alarmed the international community as it highlights the severity of the situation and Moscow’s willingness to consider extreme measures.
Russia’s internal crisis and battlefield struggles, combined with Ukraine’s growing military capabilities, cast doubt on the war’s future trajectory. As Kurt Volker observed,
“Putin is weakening his own state by waging war against Ukraine”, a dynamic that could trigger new political and social shifts inside the country. The situation remains highly volatile and demands close monitoring by analysts and experts.
The rise in internal discord within Russia and its mounting front-line problems suggest possible changes in the Kremlin’s war strategy. Heightened tensions in Russian society may create fresh challenges for the leadership, while Ukraine’s strengthening military capacity could alter the conflict’s dynamics. With Russia’s resources increasingly constrained and Ukraine expanding its own potential, the coming developments will remain under intense scrutiny both within Ukraine and abroad.
