The National Bank of Ukraine has announced the introduction of a gradual withdrawal process for old banknotes that were issued between 2003 and 2007. This decision was made to improve the quality of cash in the country.

To improve the quality of cash, the National Bank of Ukraine will begin gradually withdrawing old banknotes.

Replacement of old hryvnia banknotes with new ones

New banknotes with denominations of 50 and 200 hryvnias will gradually replace old ones issued after 2014. This process will take place during daily transactions, meaning that citizens do not need to specially exchange their old money.

As soon as old banknotes arrive at banks, they are no longer returned to circulation but are instead withdrawn and sent to the National Bank for further processing and disposal.

Significance of cash modernization

The NBU is working on cash modernization to enhance its reliability. This process includes a phased replacement of old banknotes with new ones that have improved anti-counterfeiting features. As a result, only new-style money will be in circulation, improving the quality and safety of the national currency.
