The UK and Germany signed an agreement to strengthen defense cooperation
The UK and Germany intend to enhance defense cooperation. The countries have signed an agreement that includes commitments to jointly work on developing new long-range weapons and new drones.
The UK's Defense Minister, John Healey, stated that the agreement is a 'turning point in our relations with Germany and a significant strengthening of Europe's security.'
'This provides an unprecedented level of new cooperation with the German armed forces and industry, benefiting our common security and prosperity, protecting our shared values, and strengthening our defense industrial base,' he said.
As part of the agreement, the UK and Germany aim to develop a new weapon system with greater range and accuracy than existing missiles. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long requested that Western allies allow the use of such long-range systems against targets deep inside Russia.
A new anti-missile laser developed by the UK shot down 100% of its targets while dealing with multiple threats simultaneously, according to British defense officials.
However, the UK continues to deny Ukraine such permission, while Germany has repeatedly blocked the delivery of Taurus missiles to Kyiv.
Under the agreement, the UK and Germany will also start working on equipping German Sea King helicopters with modern missile systems and will allow German P8 aircraft to 'periodically operate' from Scotland to protect the North Atlantic.
