Devastating Twin Earthquakes Rock Venezuela: At Least 188 Dead, 1,500 Injured.
Catastrophic Quakes Hit Venezuela
According to UATV: On June 24, 2026, Venezuela was struck by two powerful earthquakes, leaving at least 188 people dead, over 1,500 injured, and approximately 200 still trapped under rubble. The U.S. Geological Survey warns that the true scale of the disaster may be far worse than initial estimates. These seismic events, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale, caused severe destruction in the state of La Guaira.
At least 250 buildings were either completely destroyed or heavily damaged. As a result, 2,927 families have lost their homes.
“The disaster has left no fewer than 2,927 families without shelter,” said Jorge Rodriguez, a government official. The twin quakes have overwhelmed local emergency services, with rescue efforts hampered by widespread debris and infrastructure collapse.
Ongoing Aftershocks and National Crisis
Since the main tremors, 138 aftershocks have been recorded, further complicating rescue operations. Caracas International Airport has been shut down due to damage, worsening the logistical challenges in the region. In response, the government has declared a state of emergency and suspended school classes in affected areas.
Authorities are racing to provide aid and rescue those still trapped. The situation remains critical, with rescue teams working under extreme conditions to minimize casualties and deliver essential support to survivors.
This disaster underscores Venezuela's vulnerability to natural calamities and highlights the urgent need for stronger infrastructure to mitigate future devastation. With the state of emergency in effect, officials must prioritize rapid recovery and support for victims while developing plans to prevent similar catastrophes. International humanitarian assistance may be mobilized to help ease the crisis in the region.
