Ukraine's Parliament Works Without Heat or Running Water.
Parliament Endures Heating and Water Supply Crisis
According to TSN.ua: Due to freezing temperatures, water has been drained from the pipes in the buildings of Ukraine's Verkhovna Rada, according to the head of the parliamentary finance committee, Danylo Hetmantsev. He stated that deputies are continuing their legislative duties despite the lack of these essential utilities.
Infrastructure Damage Following Kyiv Attack
The heating and water supply issues stem from a Russian attack on Kyiv on January 20th. This assault on the capital's infrastructure resulted in:
- 5,635 apartment buildings losing their heating supply.
- Up to 80% of these buildings had only just had heat restored following a previous attack on January 9th.
Danylo Hetmantsev added that meteorologists forecast a warming trend starting January 26th, with temperatures rising to +2°C, which could alleviate some pressure on the capital's heating system.
This situation in Kyiv highlights the severe strain on civilian infrastructure caused by the ongoing war. Attacks on energy facilities continue to create immense hardship for the population and state institutions. While the predicted thaw may offer temporary relief, the fundamental challenges of restoring reliable utility services remain. The deputies' decision to continue working under these austere conditions demonstrates their commitment to maintaining government functions during a national crisis.
