The Verkhovna Rada abolished the Russian language in passports: what will change

According to inkorr.com: On October 23, during a plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada, new requirements for the issuance of passports for Ukrainians were approved. According to resolution No. 13369, all entries in the citizen's passport of Ukraine in booklet form must be exclusively in the Ukrainian language. This bill was supported by 265 deputies.

From now on, all data in the citizen's passport of Ukraine will be displayed only in the Ukrainian language, without the Russian translation that was previously present in such documents.

The adopted resolution cancels previous norms regarding foreign passports, approved back in 1992, which did not meet modern requirements. Since 2016, Ukrainian passports have been issued in ID card format, and the last passports in booklet form were issued in 2014.

In cases where a physical person needs a passport-booklet by court order, all entries in such a document will also be made only in the Ukrainian language. However, if a person already has a passport-booklet with Russian entries, it will remain valid.

This decision of the Verkhovna Rada is an important step towards strengthening Ukraine's national identity and compliance with modern standards for document issuance.

This decision of the Verkhovna Rada emphasizes the country's desire to strengthen its independence and culture through the use of the state language in documents. The introduction of such norms corresponds to European standards that promote national self-awareness and enhance the legal framework regulating document issuance. This, in turn, may increase the level of trust citizens have in state institutions.
