Ukraine’s Parliament Approves 2026 Budget with $1.56 Trillion Hryvnia Boost for Defense.
Amendments to the 2026 State Budget
According to Novyny.live: Ukraine’s Verkhovna Rada has passed amendments to the 2026 state budget, allocating an additional 1.56 trillion hryvnias to the security and defense sector. This increase pushes total defense and security spending beyond 4.3 trillion hryvnias. A substantial portion of these extra funds will go toward purchasing and upgrading weapons, military equipment, and ammunition, reflecting the government’s focus on strengthening the country’s military capabilities amid ongoing challenges.
In 2026, Ukraine is set to receive 45 billion euros through the Ukraine Support Loan program, which will further bolster defense financing. The Ministry of Defense is already drafting new contracts for infantry soldiers, offering service terms of 10, 14, and 24 months. These measures aim to enhance the army’s combat readiness in response to current threats.
Renewed Push to Strengthen Defense Capacity
On June 18, the Verkhovna Rada cleared the way for signing the budget amendment law. Economy Minister Yulia Svyrydenko commented:
“We are increasing the defense and security budget by 1.56 trillion hryvnias” - Yulia Svyrydenko.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also emphasized:
“There are resources to raise military payments. At least 30,000 hryvnias for those in the rear” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
These steps underscore Ukraine’s intensified efforts to bolster its own defense capabilities and improve social benefits for service members. The government faces the critical task of ensuring adequate army support while aligning budget expenditures with national security needs.
The 2026 budget revisions highlight the priorities of Ukrainian authorities given the country’s current security landscape. The increased defense funding, along with planned military contracts, signals the government’s intent to elevate combat readiness—a vital objective amid armed conflicts. The Ukraine Support Loan program, offering substantial financial assistance, also underscores international backing for Ukraine in this area.
