Ukraine’s Parliament Urges Zelenskyy to Secure the Return of 46 Severely Wounded Prisoners from Russian Captivity.
Support from the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: On June 9, Ukraine’s parliament voted overwhelmingly to back a formal request demanding that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy take action to bring back 46 critically injured defenders of Mariupol still held by Russia. These soldiers were wounded during the terrorist attack at the Olenivka prison colony. The motion, introduced by lawmaker Oleksandr Kovalov, received approval from 272 deputies.
The Olenivka attack occurred on the night of July 29, 2022. Kovalov stressed the urgency of the matter, stating,
“Saving lives and bringing our people home is our foremost duty.”This parliamentary move highlights growing pressure on the government to prioritize the rescue of those who suffered severe injuries in captivity.
A Humanitarian Push for Resolution
The request represents a significant step toward addressing the humanitarian crisis of Ukrainian citizens trapped in dire conditions due to the ongoing conflict. Beyond securing their release, the goal includes ensuring proper medical care for those in critical need. In wartime, saving the lives of service members has become a top national priority.
- The Rada’s endorsement signals heightened attention to the humanitarian dimensions of the war.
- It underscores the need for decisive action to bring back soldiers who have fallen victim to the conflict.
- Returning the severely wounded is not only a matter of life and death but also a moral obligation of the state.
This decision could serve as a powerful message to military families and society at large, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fight for its people even under the most challenging circumstances.
