Ryder Cup Rookie Forces USA to Lose: What Rule Sparked the Scandal.
According to The Sun: Viktor Hovland did not miss the opportunity to joke after his controversial play at the Ryder Cup.
The European and American teams argued when Hovland's neck injury led to the use of a rare rule, adding intrigue to the last day of competition at Bethpage Black.
PAThe European team secured a dramatic win with a score of 15-13 on Sunday, largely thanks to the half-point won by Hovland, despite his exit from the singles match against Harris English due to injury.
Injury Situation
Hovland, who suffered from a chronic neck injury, was forced to exit the match, resulting in the application of the rare 'secret envelope' rule, which has only been used twice since 1979.
According to this rule, the captain of each team is required to choose a player who will miss the game due to injury or illness.
Bradley has already named English as his replacement.
This half-point proved crucial as the European team withstood a strong push from the Americans and ultimately secured the 15-13 victory.
Reaction and Consequences
During the celebrations, Hovland humorously pointed to his neck while holding the Ryder Cup trophy.
After the match, Bradley expressed his discontent:
“I think everyone in the sports world can see... Nothing against Viktor. But this rule needs to change before the next Ryder Cup.”
When asked how, Bradley added:
“I have a few ideas, but I won’t lay them out right now... this rule needs to change.”
The European team did not appreciate these comments. Robert MacIntyre smiled, while Luke Donald replied:
“We have contracts for a reason, the captain's agreement for situations like this. This rule has been in place for a long time... since 1971.”
Hovland, meanwhile, showed excellent play paired with MacIntyre, defeating Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley. However, after aggravating his neck issue, he was forced to leave the match. When the European team received the trophy, Donald acknowledged Hovland's contribution:
“I had absolute faith that he could earn a point today. He wasn’t able to play. He was upset.”

The European team celebrated their victory at the Ryder Cup, referencing the significant achievements of players who managed to overcome difficulties, including Hovland. The discussions around the 'secret envelope' rule suggest a need to reevaluate outdated norms in light of contemporary events and may become a talking point in the golf world. Continuing the dialogue between team captains provides an opportunity to improve the rules of the game, ensuring fairness for all players. Read also
