High Representative of the EU: Ukraine's Experience Shows the Future of Military Technologies.
EU Urges Development of European Defense Technologies
Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, emphasized the need to develop European defense technologies, particularly in connection with the experience of the war in Ukraine.
In his blog on the European External Action Service's website, he shared thoughts expressed during the COTEC conference on technological sovereignty in defense.
"The war in Ukraine has opened a window into the future of modern combat: ground robots will do everything – from reconnaissance to direct attacks," noted Borrell, highlighting the role of unmanned systems in modern warfare.
Borrell pointed out the asymmetry of modern warfare and emphasized that even a few inexpensive drones can destroy a battle tank. He also noted that artificial intelligence and space technologies are becoming increasingly important in the military domain.
"The modern soldier relies 80% on space means for communication, positioning, and application of various weapon systems," stated Borrell.
Furthermore, the EU High Representative warned of the danger of excessive reliance on imports, especially from countries that are not strategic allies of the EU. He cited the example of the Chinese company DJI, which controls a significant share of drone production.
"Just one Chinese company DJI controls about 70% of global commercial drone production, and this fact should be a cause for concern," warned Borrell.
In his concluding remarks, Josep Borrell called for decisive actions, particularly in initiatives aimed at the development of European defense technologies. He stressed the need for investment in key technologies such as artificial intelligence, drones, and space capabilities, to unlock the potential of the European defense industry.
