Car owners with old license plates face problems: what to do.

What problems arise because of old plates

• Inability to re-register. There are limitations regarding the assignment of old plates to another vehicle or their storage at the MVS service center.

• Difficulties with selling the car. Full re-registration to a new owner is impossible without prior change of the license plate.

• Problems with insurance. It is not possible to issue an insurance policy online for a car with an old license plate, as electronic systems do not recognize it. The only option is to personally approach an insurance agent.

How to identify outdated license plates

There are two main types of plates that were issued before 2015:

1. Plates of the model before 2004. These are five-digit plates with a two-letter series and a Ukrainian flag on the left.

2. Soviet-style plates (issued before 1995, but can still be found). They consist of Cyrillic letters and numbers (for example, one letter, four numbers, two letters).

Modern standard license plates have a blue stripe with a Ukrainian flag and the code UA, two letters of the region code, four numbers, and two letters of the series.

'Now it is really necessary to change the plates while there is not such a rush. Because if these old plates are completely canceled, the queues will be even bigger, and there will be a real, very tough hype just because of the plates,' warns the expert.
