Ukrainians urge the use of reflective elements on clothing during dark hours

In order to ensure the safety of pedestrians, Ukrainians are encouraged to use reflective elements on their clothing when crossing the road during dark hours. This was reported by the head of the Juvenile Prevention Department of the National Police, Vasyl Bohdan, at a briefing, as informed by Ukrinform.

In conditions of shorter daylight and complicated traffic, the visibility of pedestrians in the dark becomes especially important. Reflective elements are a simple and effective solution that can save lives. They allow drivers to notice a pedestrian from a great distance, providing them with additional seconds to react. This is especially relevant when street lighting is turned off.

“Reflective elements can make pedestrians more visible on the road. The use of such elements reduces the chances of hitting a pedestrian in the dark by 85%,” emphasized Bohdan.

According to him, such elements are especially important for protecting children, who are less noticeable and may act unpredictably.

Bohdan provided several recommendations on how to protect oneself on the road using reflective elements.

“It is important that reflective elements are visible from all sides - from the back, front, and sides. For example, special bracelets or stickers can be attached to hands, legs, or fastened to backpacks. This will allow drivers to notice the child from different angles,” he explained.

The head of the Juvenile Police Department also emphasized that it is recommended to use various types of reflective elements for greater effectiveness.

“One keychain or sticker may not be enough. In this case, the more elements, the better. If the child is riding a bicycle or scooter, it is advisable to place reflective items on the frame, handlebars or wheels. You can also combine removable and non-removable reflective items to enhance safety,” he added.
