According to The Sun: Novak Djokovic barely secured victory over Yannick Hanfmann at the tournament in Shanghai. The Serb struggled against the heat, which overpowered him – he even vomited during the match.

Djokovic, 38 years old, faced significant difficulties after losing the first set to Hanfmann, who is ranked 150th. The heat took its toll: during the match, the Serb started to feel increasingly uncomfortable.

At one point, he bent over at the back line of the court and then rushed to the baseline after vomiting. This was just the beginning, as soon after he approached a trash can by the court to once again relieve his stomach while spectators recorded the scenes on video.

Eventually, Djokovic managed to win the match with a score of 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and is now preparing to face Jaume Munar. The athlete noted:

“It is the same burden for all players on the court, but the conditions are just terrible. “It’s awful when the humidity exceeds 80% day after day, especially for those playing during the day in the sun. For me, from a biological standpoint, it’s particularly difficult, but I had to work my way out of this situation today.”

At the same time, Yannick Sinner was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to severe cramps in the final set of his match against Tallon Griekspoor.

Sinner, who had not lost a match on hard courts prior to this, except against Carlos Alcaraz, arrived in China as the champion.

These events highlight the tough situation athletes face during competitions in extreme weather conditions. As demonstrated by the experiences of Djokovic and Sinner, even the strongest players can encounter significant difficulties, underscoring the importance of adaptation and preparation for adverse conditions. In the future, it is crucial for tournament organizers to consider weather conditions for the well-being of participants.
