Watford has a new head coach: Paolo Pezzolano dismissed after 10 matches.
According to The Sun: Watford Football Club has sacked coach Paulo Pezzolano after just 10 matches in charge.
The Uruguayan was removed despite the team winning two matches and drawing one in their last three outings.
PAReplacing him is Javi Gracia, who previously managed Watford for 66 matches from January 2018 to September 2019.
Pezzolano becomes the 22nd coach appointed by club owner Gino Pozzo since taking over Watford in 2012, replacing fan-favorite Tom Cleverley.
The information about Pezzolano's dismissal is conveyed in just one sentence amid the announcement of the new coach.
The club confirmed on their social media:
“Watford FC is pleased to confirm the return of Javi Gracia as head coach following the termination of the contract with Paulo Pezzolano and his coaching staff, to whom we sincerely thank for their efforts and commitment during their tenure. “We wish them success in the future.”
Pezzolano joined Watford in May after previously working with Mexican team Pachuca, Brazilian Cruzeiro, and Spanish Valladolid.
However, his start at the club was unsuccessful: in the first six matches, the team managed to secure only five points while Pezzolano tried to implement his style of play.
After a 2-1 victory over Oxford, Watford was just three points away from the playoffs.
MY OPINION: The question is not why Pezzolano was sacked, but why he was hired?
Watford fans seem unlikely to mourn Paulo Pezzolano.
The Uruguayan specialist came in after the controversial sacking of Tom Cleverley and immediately got to work with a 'all or nothing' approach.
Player Kwado Baah, who performed well under Cleverley, has barely seen the pitch in the last five matches.
Newcomer Nestor Elhankunda from Bayern also made headlines when he left the field just 33 minutes into the match.
The phrases 'You’ll be sacked tomorrow' became reality, as Pezzolano turned out to be yet another coach falling victim to the constant changes in management under Gino Pozzo.
The situation became critical when the team delivered a disappointing home performance against Blackburn, which was attended by music legend Elton John, celebrating his 50th anniversary as club chairman.
Despite some signs of improvement, as the team earned seven points in three games, Pezzolano showed that his approach was beginning to yield results.
This 42-year-old coach noted that he previously needed time to implement his ideas, but unfortunately, at Watford, conflicts within the team or unsatisfactory results lead to dismissals.
Thus, Pozzo ended Pezzolano’s brief tenure at Vicarage Road after just 10 matches.
The main question for the owner is not 'Why did he fire Paulo Pezzolano?', but 'Why did he hire him?'
Pezzolano leaves the club with the third-shortest tenure in Watford's history.
Only Billy McKinlay and Oscar Garcia spent less time in charge, managing just two and four matches, respectively.
He has a record of 25 wins from 66 matches over an 18-month period.
Gracia previously managed Valencia and Al-Sadd. He also had an unsuccessful stint at Leeds in 2023, lasting less than three months with three wins from 12 matches.
Gracia has not managed any club since leaving Elland Road.
This news about Watford's coaching change highlights the instability within the club. Owner Gino Pozzo has repeatedly changed coaches, raising concerns among fans. Whether Gracia can stabilize the team and bring them back to playoff contention is a question that all club supporters are seeking an answer to?
