PGA of America apologized to McIlroy: golfer's wife had beer thrown at her.
Apology to Rory McIlroy
According to The Sun: Rory McIlroy received an official apology after an incident at the Ryder Cup tournament, where beer was thrown at his wife Erica Stoll.
McIlroy has become an important figure in the European team which won at Bethpage last weekend.
One of the fans threw beer at Erica during the tournament in New York.Shane Lowry made the winning putt, allowing the European team to retain the title in New York. However, the Ryder Cup was overshadowed by unpleasant incidents due to constant insults from the American fans.
Fans were shouting “f**k you Rory” throughout the tournament, insulting his family. The situation escalated when one aggressive fan threw beer at Rory's wife.
Erica reportedly was in tears after this incident.
After this, PGA of America apologized to McIlroy for the unacceptable actions. Chief Executive Derek Sprague confirmed that he personally apologized to Rory and Erica for the fans' behavior.
“I sent a long email to Rory and Erica, telling them that we will do better in the future,” Sprague stated.
He also emphasized that future Ryder Cups in the USA should not include such aggressive behavior.
“I am disappointed in the fans' behavior, disappointed in what happened on the first tee, it’s just not who we are. I am very disappointed,” he added.
At the end of the tournament, McIlroy shared his thoughts about the insults that Erica experienced.
“It’s just beyond reason, but obviously that’s how it was this week. Erica is okay. She’s a very strong woman,” he said.
“She handled all of this with grace, dignity, and courage, as always. I love her, and tonight we will celebrate well.”
This incident highlights the importance of respect in sports competitions. Criticizing athletes and their relatives should only occur within the boundaries of healthy competition, as sports are primarily entertainment and a celebration for fans. The apology from PGA of America should signal a need to improve the atmosphere at future tournaments to avoid similar situations in the future.
