Return to the Roots

This is a return to the place where it all began for Mourinho - to all the trophies, images, and controversies.

The Portuguese has always fostered rivalries with managers and referees, and even the head of the UEFA referees committee, Volker Roth, once stated that he is an "enemy of football".

Mourinho has never hesitated in his responses, often harming both his team and his own career.

Before his appearance at Stamford Bridge, SunSport looks at the most controversial moments of the Special One.

Tactile Antics

Mourinho first hit the headlines in 2004 when he celebrated a goal at Old Trafford, while coaching Porto.

This became a symbol of his career, and ten years later he was at it again when Demba Ba’s goal took Chelsea to the Champions League semifinals, beating Paris

Ironically, his 1000th match as a manager provoked another sprint when Mourinho ran after his Roma players after a late win over Sassuolo.

But his passion sometimes got out of control in other situations, particularly during confrontations with opponents and fourth officials.

During a previous return to Stamford Bridge with Manchester United, he had to be restrained by his own staff.

Mourinho was infuriated that Chelsea coach Marco Ianni celebrated a late equalizer right in front of him by the dugout.

Mourinho tried to leave the dugout, for which he had to be restrained by security guards, Phil Neville, and other staff members of the Red Devils when he tried to confront the Italian.

Subsequently, Ianni and then Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri apologized for the incident.

Rivalry with Wenger

Mourinho began responding to Arsene Wenger during his second season at Chelsea, tired of the numerous comments from the former Arsenal manager about his team.

He launched a memorable rant, stating about Wenger:

“Wenger has a real problem with us, and I think he is what people in England call a voyeur. He loves watching other people. There are people who, when at home, have a big telescope to see what happens in other families. Wenger must be one of them – it's a disease. He talks, talks, talks about Chelsea.”

Wenger responded by calling Mourinho a "fool" and complained that he was “disconnected from reality.”

This exchange of quips continued even after Mourinho left England, particularly in 2008 when he managed Inter.

At that time he noted:

“The English love statistics. Do they know that Arsene Wenger has only a 50 percent win rate in the Premier League?”

But his biggest attack came when he returned to Chelsea, calling Wenger a “specialist in failure.”

“Am I afraid of failure? He is a specialist in failures. I am not. So if someone thinks he is right and I am afraid of failure, it is because I do not fail many times. Maybe he is right. I am not used to failure.”

This comment led to a conflict when Wenger shoved Mourinho during a match in October 2014.

Wenger admitted he was provoked by Mourinho, and they did not shake hands during their next meeting at the Super Cup.

“Respect”

At a press conference in the 2018-19 season, Mourinho rebutted questions from journalists after a 0-3 defeat while managing United.

Holding up three fingers, Mourinho said:

“What was the score? 3-0? You know what that means? 3-0. That also means three Premier Leagues, and I have won more Premier Leagues alone than the other 19 managers combined.”

He then stood up from his seat, gesturing with his hand to calm the journalists, repeatedly stating, “respect, respect, man”.

Dispute with Eva Carneiro

During his second spell as Chelsea manager, Mourinho came under investigation by FA for alleged abusive or sexist language towards team doctor Eva Carneiro.

He was reported to have shouted: “son of a b****” during a confrontation with the medic.

Mourinho was outraged by the situation when Dr. Carneiro came onto the field to provide medical assistance to Eden Hazard during a match against Swansea, leading to the Belgian temporarily leaving the pitch.

At the time, Chelsea was already down to ten players after a red card to Thibaut Courtois, and Mourinho felt that the immediate loss of Hazard further reduced his team's chances.

After the match, he was furious:

“Even if you are a masseur, a doctor, or a secretary on the bench, you should understand the game. You should know that you have one less player, and when you go onto the field to help a player, you must be sure that he has a serious injury. I was sure he did not have a serious issue.”

Dr. Carneiro was subsequently demoted following the incident and later brought a claim for wrongful dismissal, conducting her case against Chelsea under confidentiality.

Chelsea later apologized “unreservedly” to the former first team doctor for the inconvenience caused.

Hide and Seek in the Laundry Basket

For the first time in the Premier League, during the Champions League quarter-final against Bayern, Mourinho received a touchline ban.

But that did not stop him from getting into the dressing room to talk to his team.

He later told Sky Sports:

“I walked into the dressing room throughout the day, so I was there from lunch, and the match was at 19:00. I just wanted to be in the dressing room when the players arrived. I went there, and no one saw me. The problem was getting out afterwards. And Stuart Benstead, the masseur, put me in a basket. It was a bit open so I could breathe. But when he took it out of the dressing room, UEFA people were watching him and trying to find me, so he closed the box, and I couldn’t breathe.”

Finger in the Eye

During his years at Real, Mourinho became embroiled in numerous controversies.

His biggest rivals were players from Barcelona, and it all peaked in an El Clásico match.

After the match, Mourinho unexpectedly poked Tito Vilanova in the eye and moved on.

Barcelona did not file an official complaint, but the club stated:

“The public has voiced its opinion. It is very clear that what this person did was wrong. The federation (of Spanish football) will act if it wishes.”

This incident resulted in a two-match ban for Mourinho, which was later lifted under a general amnesty.

Mourinho apologized a year later and has always regretted the incident.

Wiretap

Conspiracy theories really took hold of Mourinho during his time in Rome.

He was convinced that referees were biased against him during the 2022-2023 season, in which he received three red cards on the touchline.

So, in true Mourinho fashion, he took measures for his defense, becoming an informer and wearing a wire.

He said:

“I’m not a fool, you know. Today I went to the game with a microphone. I recorded everything. From the moment I left the dressing room to the moment I returned. I was protecting myself.”
This news highlights the ongoing controversies faced by José Mourinho, a man who often comes under scrutiny for his behavior on and off the pitch. Despite his successes in football, his management style and emotional reactions remain a challenge for the team he works with and for society as a whole. It is always interesting to follow how his career events intertwine with his ambiguous personality and impact his relationships with colleagues in the sporting industry.
