According to The Sun: Martin Kelly announced his retirement from professional football at 35 years old earlier this week.

The former defender made 62 appearances for his hometown club 'Liverpool' and 148 for 'Crystal Palace'. In 2012, he received one call-up to the England squad.

Kelly took to the field during a friendly match against Norway in 2012 and was part of the squad under Roy Hodgson at Euro 2012 that summer.

Although his club career was quite lengthy, Kelly never managed to return to the national team after that brief period in international football.

This is not uncommon, as 358 players have received only one call-up to the 'Three Lions'. Many of them played during the early development of English football: 105 players with one call-up represented their country in the 19th century, and 249 before World War II.

Interestingly, Charles Burgess Fry, who received his only call-up in 1901, soon retired but played for another 11 years in Test cricket for his country.

Among other past stars with one cap are Arthur Rowe and Bill Nicholson, the only ones to have ever won top division titles with 'Tottenham' as coaches.

In more recent years, such cases have become rarer: in the 21st century, there have been only 39, although some, like Adam Worston, may receive more call-ups.

BEST PLAYERS WITH ONE CALL-UP

JOHN RUDDY

Goalkeeper John Ruddy was chosen for Euro 2012 by Hodgson after a successful season at 'Norwich', but missed it due to a broken finger.

The tall 1.93 m goalkeeper debuted in August of the same year, replacing Jack Butland during a friendly win over Italy with a score of 2-1.

After another impressive game at 'Norwich', Ruddy narrowly missed a spot in the squad for the 2014 World Cup, ending up on the reserve list alongside Joe Hart, Ben Foster, and Fraser Forster.

This squad represents players who have only one call-up to the England team in recent years.

Martin Kelly's retirement sparked memories of other footballers who had similar experiences. His journey in football, while bright, shows that even with talent, one does not always manage to secure a spot in the National Team. For many athletes, a single call-up can become a decisive moment in their career, regardless of all the efforts and achievements at the club level.
