Jockey's Apology After an Unfortunate Situation in the Race

According to The Sun: Jockey Freddy Gordon apologized to the spectators after nearly losing victory on a clear favorite.

Even the Sky Sports Racing host and Sun Racing columnist, Matt Chapman, couldn't hold back and asked:

“What the hell were you thinking?!”
during the post-race discussion. Freddy Gordon, in green silks, right on the horse Jorebel, thought he had already won the race by just glancing over his shoulder. Hill Station raced up the inside and had to urge his horse again after thinking he had already won the race. Gordon won by just a nose - some spectators couldn't determine the gap between them in the official photo. The jockey took the rare step of apologizing to the spectators after nearly losing victory.

The Situation in the Race

Gordon approached victory calmly with 3-1 Jorebel among the newcomers at Fontwell. With a lead of four lengths and control over the distance, he slowed the pace, believing the victory was already secured.

However, as he glanced over his shoulder, he failed to notice Hill Station sneaking up from behind.

As Luke Scott approached Gordon, he had to urge the horse Jorebel once again.

On the brink of a serious blunder, Gordon managed to restore his horse's speed and ultimately won - officially by just a nose.

But the dissatisfaction did not end there. Some spectators doubted the official photo finish that was presented on television.

Despite their discontent, the judges confirmed their decision to declare Jorebel the winner after a long investigation.

In the post-race discussion, Gordon appeared excited.

He turned to the camera and apologized for the “terrible” incident that could have had serious consequences had he lost.

Blanched Gordon responded to Chapman's question:

“I’m sorry for that. I looked back and only saw a free horse - the other horse was covered by the free horse. Then I looked at the screen and realized that there was another horse beside me.
“Before the line it was terrible. With the delay, I didn’t know if I had won or not. It’s a very, very lucky day for me, and I sincerely apologize for causing everyone a heart attack.”

The official report from the judges confirmed:

“A complaint was made about Freddy Gordon's ride on the winning JOREBEL (FR), who was clear in the lead during the last obstacle when Gordon began to slow his horse in the last furlong to keep the victory by a nose. Gordon's explanation that he looked over his left shoulder twice and in both cases a free horse blocked his view of the rapidly closing second was noted. He was reminded, however, that he bears the responsibility to ensure he crosses the finish line fully.

This situation highlights the importance of attention and concentration in horse racing. A jockey, even when in clear lead, cannot afford to lose focus as a single moment can change everything. Gordon's apology and awareness of the mistake demonstrate how great the responsibility weighs on jockeys' shoulders during competitions.
