Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson injured: who will replace the Brazilian in the match against Chelsea

According to The Sun: Liverpool fans were stunned as the team suffered its second defeat of the 2025-26 season in the Champions League, which was a significant blow to its campaign.

In addition to this, Liverpool coach Arne Slot reported that goalkeeper Alisson Becker sustained an injury during the defeat to Galatasaray in Istanbul.

This injury could impact Liverpool's participation in the match against Chelsea, which will take place at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Who is Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili?

Slot is already preparing a backup plan, as Giorgi Mamardashvili is poised for his Premier League debut.

The Georgian goalkeeper joined Liverpool from Valencia in the summer. The deal was made over a year ago, and now he is ready to make his mark in his new team.

After four seasons in Spain, where he played 134 matches, Mamardashvili also made his debut for the Georgian national team. He quickly became a key player during Euro 2024, making 21 saves in the group stage — the most in the tournament's history.

After a successful performance at Euro 2024, the Georgian was quickly bought by 'Liverpool'. The transfer cost the team £29 million, which included a base fee of £25 million and an additional £4 million in bonuses.

Although Alisson remained the first-choice goalkeeper after Mamardashvili's signing, the sale of Caoimhín Kelleher to Brentford this summer increased the 24-year-old player's chances.

The question arises whether Slot intended to use Mamardashvili so quickly in the season.

The Georgian will undoubtedly be a valuable asset for Liverpool following Alisson's injury sustained during the second Champions League game, which ended in a defeat to Galatasaray.

Liverpool conceded a goal after Okan Buruk's team converted a penalty in the 16th minute, and Alisson sustained his injury in the 58th minute — he left the field after a save from striker Osimhen. Striker Hugo Ekitike was also forced to leave the match due to injury.

This situation caused deep frustration for Slot's team in Istanbul, especially after the recent defeat to Crystal Palace, which halted their perfect start in the Premier League.

After the match, Slot noted:

“If my player is lying on the field, nine times out of ten I fear the worst, and by the worst, I mean he can’t continue,”
adding:
“It’s never positive if you go off like that. You can be sure he won’t play on Saturday.”

This news becomes another worrying sign for Liverpool, as Alisson missed 10 Premier League matches last season due to a thigh injury, jeopardizing the team's plans in key matches this season.
