Reasons for wearing black armbands

The black armbands worn by Arsenal and Newcastle players have become a symbol of remembrance for Billy Vigar, who sadly passed away at the age of 21 due to a tragic head injury sustained during a match for Chichester City.

Billy Vigar went through Arsenal's academy.

Vigar received long treatment on the field after sustaining his injury, then was evacuated to the hospital and placed in an artificial coma.

Though he underwent surgery, he unfortunately passed away from his injuries on Thursday.

Vigar joined Arsenal's academy at the age of 14 and played for the under-18 team, in Premier League 2, and in the EFL Trophy.

Arsenal released the following statement regarding Vigar's death:

“Everyone at Arsenal is shocked by the news of the tragic passing of former academy graduate Billy Vigar. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Billy.”

The tragic incident that occurred last Saturday at Molan Rebak Stadium in Winger and Finchley has prompted calls for a ban on the brick walls surrounding football fields in the UK.

A petition has already gathered over 12,000 signatures, and the FA has confirmed that it is starting an investigation.

This case highlights the need to enhance safety at football fields, as inspecting the conditions under which matches are played and ensuring they meet modern safety standards becomes increasingly urgent. We hope this will serve as a push for positive change in the sporting infrastructure of the UK.
