Europeans are met with numerous exclamations of discontent as they approach the tee boxes at Bethpage Black.

At golf tournaments, especially at the Ryder Cup, unusual shouts from spectators often occur.

Why do golf fans shout “potato passes”?

Typically, spectators shout 'get in the hole' when the ball is flying after a player's shot. But sometimes fans shout random phrases, among which the exclamation “potato passes” is particularly popular.

This cry was first heard at the PGA Championship in 2010 after a shot from Tiger Woods. The clip of this exclamation quickly went viral online, and since then it can be heard at the largest golf tournaments in the world.

In 2011, American fan Andrew Widdmar shouted it again after Woods' shot at the Chevron World Challenge, explaining that he wanted his mother to recognize him on television.

Although there is no official reason for this shout, it has become popular and often sounds at major events, although players do not always respond positively to such cries.

At the 2018 Genesis Open tournament, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy criticized the behavior of some fans and even had one loud fan removed from the stands.

Thomas said at the time: “I was in shock, that's enough for me.”

The Ryder Cup is back as Team Europe defends its title on American soil this weekend.

Luke Donald's team is already in New York waiting to start on Friday, aiming to repeat its success in prestigious events this century, having won eight of eleven matches since 2002.

However, only two of these victories occurred on US soil — Team USA won both tournaments in 2021 and 2016.

It should be noted that Team Europe has only managed to win one of the four Ryder Cups held in the US since they triumphed in 2004. This year, the Americans come in as favorites according to bookmakers.
