Jose Mourinho may leave Benfica by the end of the season: contract details.
According to The Sun: Jose Mourinho may end up without a job at Benfica at the end of the season, despite signing a two-year contract.
The 62-year-old coach returned to the Lisbon club 25 years after his previous departure from Estadio da Luz.
AFPMourinho quickly returned to management after being dismissed from Fenerbahce in August. However, his new stint at Benfica may turn out to be short.
The former Manchester United, Tottenham, and Chelsea coach was presented as the club's new head coach by president Rui Costa.
Although Mourinho has taken up the position, his future may be uncertain due to the upcoming presidential elections at Benfica next month.
When asked during the presentation whether he is an electoral asset, Costa replied: 'I am here as the president of Benfica, I choose the coach for Benfica. I am confused by the use of this term.'
He added: 'Our duty is to think about the future of the club, not about elections, as that would mean leaving the club without a coach until the elections.'
Costa also commented on the deal with Mourinho: 'At the end of the season, there is a clause that leaves the club the option to continue its cooperation with the coach or not.'

'We are hiring a coach at Benfica who is not indifferent on a global scale; he is one of the most respected names in the world. We are securing the future of Benfica with a great coach.'
Management Changes
Costa believes that the tenures of coaches in football have significantly shortened, stating: 'I am grateful to the coaches who worked with me over these four years, but such is life in football.'
'(Roger) Schmidt was a champion, but did not achieve the success that was expected, (Bruno) Lage started mid-season...'
'I try to provide coaches with this continuity, until we realize that something needs to change. This is part of football.'
Coaching Ambitions
Regarding his contract, Mourinho said: 'This is a contract with a strong sense of ethics. I just signed it, without any conditions.'
'I only sign things that I like, but the club has great respect for the elections and for the members who will run for president.'
'The day after the elections I will be the coach of Benfica, but having this ethical aspect allows for whatever may come.'
'I want to work at Benfica, but I want people to be on the same wavelength as me. I aim to successfully complete the two-year contract so that the club wants to extend it.'
Acknowledging Mistakes
Mourinho, who arrived at the presentation in a luxurious Ferrari, also acknowledged that he 'made a mistake' moving to Fenerbahce.
'My career has been rich, I have coached in different countries, I made the wrong choice, but I do not regret it.'
He emphasized: 'But I realize what we did well or poorly. I made a mistake going to Fenerbahce, but I gave everything until the last day. Coaching Benfica is a return to my level.'
The first game under Mourinho's management will take place against AVS on Saturday. Later this month he will return to Stamford Bridge when his new team faces Chelsea in the Champions League on September 30.

Mourinho's return to Benfica has sparked lively discussion among players and fans. His experience and recognition could be key factors in boosting the club's competitiveness. However, uncertainty surrounding his future due to the elections may affect the team's results in the upcoming matches.
The prospects for Benfica in the Champions League are also becoming relevant, as the match against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge will be a real test for Mourinho. One can only hope that the coach can find the necessary balance between the club's ambitions and the demands of new challenges.
