Vinted is one of the most popular platforms in the UK for buying and selling second-hand clothing.

To date, more than 16 million people in the UK are registered on this platform.

From ways to increase your listing visibility to finding affordable items and protecting yourself as a buyer or seller — here’s everything you need to know.

Setting up as a seller

Some sellers on Vinted only make a few pounds, but others report earning hundreds or even thousands of pounds a month.

For instance, a successful seller on Vinted, Irem, who runs the TikTok account @pastgems, claims to have made £110,000 on the platform.

While most people sell clothing, you can also sell toys, cosmetics, appliances, home items, electronics, sports equipment, and books on Vinted.

All you need to do is add a few photos of the item and description, choose a category, and set a price.

How to boost sales

Experienced seller on Vinted Melanie Monchar (@melaniemonch) has over 400 five-star reviews and has been selling for four years.

A mother of three has developed her checklist for successful sales:

  • Photos: "Stop the scroll" when browsing listings, so it's important that the photos are clear, taken in good lighting, and showcase the item. Iron clothes so they don’t look wrinkled, and choose a nice background.
  • Right title: Use keywords so buyers can easily find your item.
  • Price evaluation: Research how much similar items sell for on Vinted and other platforms.
  • Timing of sales: Consider seasonality. For example, winter clothing sells better in the colder months.
  • Item description: Include a detailed description, even flaws, to be transparent.
"Don't reduce it to 'size medium' or 'in excellent condition' – describe the item in detail to entice the buyer. Write a whole paragraph if you have the chance."

She also emphasizes a common mistake, where sellers leave items active for too long: "After a month or even three weeks, take down the item and re-upload it, especially on weekends when people get paid," she adds.

I earned £1.2k on Vinted - my 50p sale trick

Thrifting fashion influencer Zakia Mulawi Gery earned £1,200 on Vinted selling a dress to a BAFTA guest.

A 37-year-old woman from Edinburgh who is the CEO and founder of Invisible Cities sold 48 items on Vinted over two years.

"I only sell vintage and retro-styled items on Vinted. I believe unique items sell well," she says.

Zakia chose the username @VintageMamaScot, reflecting her style and reminding her of her beloved mother who passed during the pandemic.

Her most interesting sale is a red maxi dress with sequins she found at a thrift shop in New York for just $6 (£4.49). She decided to sell it because she realized it was too big for her.

Zakia believes selling unique items at an affordable price, like COS, can be profitable.

"If it's something you definitely won't find anywhere else, it will sell much quicker."

Zakia also recommends first determining the minimum price you're willing to sell an item for, to be able to lower the price if necessary. "When I re-upload the item, I lower the price by £1 or 50p," she adds.

How to quickly sell your items

Vinted rewards sellers for regular updates, increasing the visibility of their listings to more buyers.

Try to become an active user by gradually uploading items rather than all at once. Or delete and re-upload items that haven’t sold.

You can also offer discounts on item combinations to attract buyers.

These discounts usually range from 5% to 50%.

Money-saving expert Holly Jay-Smith emphasizes the importance of packaging items for good reviews.

Holly, who runs a money-saving blog at couponqueen.co.uk, says:

"You can buy packing bags and thank you cards very cheaply on eBay."
She adds: "I usually include a small pack of Haribo from a multipack bought at Home Bargains."

After this, Holly started receiving five-star reviews every time.

The right price can also improve your sales. Super seller Annmarie McGunnigle believes the "magic price" is £6.50. She says:

"This is a step up from £5, but for buyers, it’s ‘less than £10’, considering buyer protection and shipping."

Working at Vinted - my five ways to quickly sell items

Want insider tips for quickly selling your items? Natacha Blanchard from Vinted shared her secrets.

  • Right timing: If you upload listings just before the weekend, you maximize your chances of selling, as people browse Vinted the most on those days.
  • Sell complementary items simultaneously: If you’re selling several items that go well together, mention that in the description.
  • Mention fashion trends: If your item fits a certain fashion style, be sure to include that in the description.
  • Improve your photos: The first photo should clearly show the item from the front. A solid background is a good option.
  • Check the price: Set the price at 60-80% of the retail value of new tagged items.

Avoid extra costs

Vinted offers various ways to maximize your return from listings, but this comes at a cost, and sometimes it can be unprofitable.

When you “boost” an item, it appears at the top of buyers’ feeds for three days.

The cost of boosting depends on the item’s price, duration, and type of boost.

For example, an item priced at £5 will cost £1 for a three-day boost or £1.55 for a seven-day boost.

Another option is to subscribe to the “Wardrobe Service,” which shows several of your listings to buyers.

According to Melanie, she usually does not take advantage of the “boost” and “wardrobe” features, as her items sell well on their own, but it can be useful if you need a quick sale.

Profiting from sales

If a buyer pays for an item, the amount appears as “Pending” in your Vinted balance.

Buyers have two days after receiving the item to confirm everything is in order or report an issue.

The order will only be completed after confirmation. The money will move to your “Available balance” after that.

Avoid delivery issues

The seller does not pay for shipping; the buyer covers this cost.

Sellers can select their preferred delivery option if they have an In Post or Royal Mail drop-off point nearby.

Providing several delivery options increases your chances of selling.

How to find great deals as a buyer

Here are five tips from our experts on finding great deals on Vinted:

  • Be specific: instead of "vintage dress," try "floral midi dress from the '90s."
  • Adding an item to "Saved Searches" will help you get alerts for new listings.
  • Shop off-season: such items are less in demand.
  • Don’t be afraid to negotiate, but don’t be rude - a usual discount of 10-15% is acceptable.
  • Look for item combinations to get discounts.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

When buying and selling on Vinted, it’s essential to know your rights.

Sellers:

If a buyer wants to return an item, you are not obliged to accept the return.

However, the buyer can open a dispute, claiming the item did not arrive or does not match the description.

Melanie shares that she doesn’t sell anything over £25 since “there isn’t enough protection for sellers.”

It’s important to photograph the item before packaging.

Buyers:

Vinted offers buyer protection only if you conduct all transactions on the platform.

Avoid hidden costs

While Vinted does not charge for listing items, there are some hidden costs.

For instance, be sure to consider how you will package your item for shipping.

Also, as a buyer, you will need to cover the shipping cost and any additional fee for buyer protection.
