Ukraine to Impose Seasonal Ban on Mussel and Shrimp Fishing Starting June 1, 2026.
Seasonal Fishing Restrictions for Marine Life in Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: To restore marine populations, Ukraine will introduce seasonal bans on catching mussels and shrimp beginning June 1, 2026. These measures aim to protect the marine ecosystem and ensure stability within the fishing industry. The shrimp fishing prohibition will last until July 31, 2026, while the mussel ban will remain in effect through August 30, 2026. Additionally, from June 1, 2026, a ban on catching crayfish will be enforced, ending in late June 2026.
Fishing Catch Limits
It is worth noting that as of May 20, 2023, the spring-summer spawning ban has ended on most of Ukraine's rivers. During this period, anglers are permitted to fish in accordance with established regulations. The daily catch limit is set at up to 3 kilograms, plus one additional fish if it exceeds the minimum size requirement.
- Catfish – 80 cm
- Pike – 50 cm
- Zander – 42 cm
- Common bleak – 22 cm
- Ide – 30 cm
- Tench and vimba – 20 cm
- Chub and sabrefish – 24 cm
It is important to highlight that catching rare fish species listed in Ukraine's Red Book is prohibited, a critical step for preserving biodiversity. The introduction of these new seasonal bans on mussels and shrimp, alongside other regulations, underscores Ukraine's commitment to conserving aquatic resources and maintaining ecological balance.
These changes are part of Ukraine's broader environmental protection and resource restoration strategy. Seasonal fishing restrictions on marine organisms like mussels and shrimp will not only help sustain their populations but also support the overall health of the ecosystem. It is essential that fishers and all stakeholders in the fishing industry adhere to the new rules, as this will contribute to the long-term stability of Ukraine's fisheries sector.
