Half of Ukraine's Railway Discounts Set to Expire for Some Passengers in May.
Changes to Discounted Railway Travel Starting May 2024
According to Novyny.live: Starting in May 2024, certain groups of Ukrainians will no longer qualify for reduced railway fares, including a 50% discount on tickets. It is important to note that these rail travel benefits are only valid from October 1 to May 15 each year; after this period, some passenger categories will lose access to the discounts entirely.
Specifically, individuals with Group III disabilities, who currently enjoy a 50% discount on tickets, will see this benefit expire after May 15. Likewise, companions accompanying persons with Group I disabilities will also lose their discount privileges on the same date. This means that come summer, these passengers will face a 50% increase in ticket prices.
Who Still Qualifies for Discounts?
In contrast, several other groups will continue to receive rail fare reductions year-round. These include:
- Children and students aged 6 to 14 are entitled to a 25% discount on domestic tickets.
- Students and pupils enrolled in educational institutions can use a 50% discount on travel in all domestic rail cars.
- Combatants have the option of free travel once every two years or a 50% discount once a year.
- Parents of fallen service members are eligible for a 50% discount on all railway journeys within Ukraine.
As a result, from May 2024, discounted railway travel will be significantly restricted for some population groups, raising concerns among those currently benefiting from these fare reductions.
The removal of rail travel benefits for certain groups could have a major impact on their mobility, especially given rising costs for other modes of transportation.
This decision stems from the need to optimize the state budget, but it may jeopardize transport accessibility for vulnerable citizens. At the same time, preserving benefits for other groups reflects the government's efforts to support those most in need amid current economic challenges.
