Power Restored at Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant After Another Blackout – What Happened.
Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Plant Back Online After Power Outage
According to UATV: External electricity supply to the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP) was restored on June 13, 2023, at 2:30 PM. The plant is now receiving power through a 330 kV overhead transmission line. This restoration followed a blackout that began on June 10, 2023, at 9:09 PM, when the 'ZATPP – Ferroalloy No. 1' power line tripped, cutting off external power. During the outage, the plant relied on backup diesel generators to maintain critical safety functions.
This incident marks the 19th blackout at ZNPP since Russian forces occupied the facility. Since the start of 2026, the plant has experienced seven such outages. Restoring power is a crucial step for maintaining stable operations at the plant, which remains a vital piece of Ukraine's energy infrastructure and a key focus of international safety concerns.
Why Restoring Power Matters
Bringing the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant back online is essential for Ukraine's energy security, especially amid ongoing military conflict. Emergencies at the facility could pose severe risks not only to the surrounding region but to the entire country.
Given the frequency of these outages, ensuring reliable power sources and robust emergency preparedness is critical to mitigating potential safety hazards at the plant.
