Summoned to Kyiv Over Elections: What’s Known About Zaluzhnyi’s Potential Candidacy.
Debate Over Valeriy Zaluzhnyi’s Role in the Presidential Race
According to Espreso.tv: Marina Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva assessed the likelihood of former Commander-in-Chief Valeriy Zaluzhnyi entering the presidential election, noting that he has not formally announced any intention to run. She expressed doubt about the feasibility of holding elections in the fall due to ongoing security challenges in Ukraine. Zaluzhnyi served as the head of Ukraine’s Armed Forces from July 2021 until February 2024, and in May 2024, he was appointed as Ukraine’s ambassador to the United Kingdom.
In February 2025, Zaluzhnyi stated that discussing his potential presidential bid was inappropriate while the war continues. Despite this, he consistently appears in opinion polls as a possible candidate. On July 1, 2026, reports emerged that Zaluzhnyi had been called to Kyiv to clarify his stance on running for president.
Expert Views on the Election Outlook
Marina Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva remarked:
“It’s true that such rumors surface from time to time.”She added:
“I wouldn’t be so optimistic that elections will definitely take place in the fall.”She also emphasized that “Zelenskyy will have to negotiate not only with Zaluzhnyi.” For his part, Zaluzhnyi addressed the possibility of elections by stating: “I will not agree to the option of not running and just going to work.”
As a result, the question of Zaluzhnyi’s participation in the presidential race remains unresolved, with expert commentary pointing to the complex security situation in Ukraine that could disrupt election planning.
The broader election landscape in Ukraine is further complicated by the ongoing war. Concerns over safety risks have cast doubt on whether voting can proceed in the fall without undermining national stability. Zaluzhnyi’s potential involvement in the political process is likely to remain a focal point of discussion, as his name—despite no official confirmation—continues to dominate public attention and could significantly reshape Ukraine’s political future.
