Russian General Lapin Sentenced in Absentia: Key Details of the Case.
Russian General Alexander Lapin Found Guilty
According to Espreso.tv: Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko announced that a guilty verdict has been handed down in absentia against Russian General Alexander Lapin, who commanded aggression against Ukraine. Lapin, a colonel-general in the Russian Armed Forces, led the 'Center' military group. His responsibilities included directing the offensive from Belarus and Russia toward the Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions, as well as the capital city of Kyiv.
The court convicted Lapin of violating Ukraine's territorial integrity and waging an aggressive war. According to Ruslan Kravchenko, prosecutors proved that in February-March 2022, this general was not merely a nominal commander 'on paper.' He personally organized the invasion, planned operations, and coordinated the actions of subordinate units. The sentence was delivered in absentia because Lapin is currently evading justice in Russia.
Significance of the Verdict
This ruling represents a major step toward delivering justice for victims of Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The in absentia conviction of General Lapin could set a precedent for future legal proceedings against other war criminals involved in the conflict. It also highlights Ukraine's ongoing efforts to hold perpetrators accountable for crimes committed during the war and its determination to punish those responsible for aggression against a sovereign state.
