IAEA Restores Power Supply to Zaporizhzhia NPP: How Russia Prepares to Steal the Plant

According to ТСН: Technical specialists with the support of the IAEA have completed important repair work on power lines near the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant.

The agency's Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi noted that the restoration was made possible due to temporary ceasefire agreements in the area of the NPP.

The IAEA and the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that they recently restored the power line connecting the ZNPP to the Ukrainian energy system. The plant, which is currently operating in a 'cold shutdown' mode, has been re-energized from territory controlled by Ukraine. The radiation background remains within normal limits.

Frequency of Power Supply Restoration

This is already the third time in recent months that, with the assistance of the IAEA, external power supply to the ZNPP has been restored. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, the plant has experienced at least 12 blackouts due to shelling by Russian occupiers.

Threat from Russia

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine warns that Russia will continue its attempts to connect the Zaporizhzhia NPP to its energy system. MFA spokesman Georgiy Tikhiy stated on air that Russian troops are deliberately damaging power lines to test the possibility of reconnecting the plant.

“The Russians themselves have cut the cables supplying the ZNPP. They did this solely for the purpose of testing the connection of the plant to their energy network. Thus, they continue to prepare for, in essence, the theft of the Zaporizhzhia NPP. And with this aim, they are cutting the lines, putting the existence of this unique and enormous nuclear facility at risk,” – reported Georgiy Tikhiy.

The MFA emphasizes that it is Russia's actions that are causing regular outages at the plant and constant risks to nuclear safety in the region.

Let us remind you that U.S. President Donald Trump expressed that during negotiations with Volodymyr Zelensky, the situation at the Zaporizhzhia NPP was discussed. According to him, Putin is willing to cooperate with Ukraine to reopen the plant, which is currently occupied by the RF.

The restoration of power supply to the ZNPP is important not only for the local energy system but also for overall nuclear safety in the region. The continuation of Russian attacks on infrastructure indicates serious threats to Ukraine. This underscores the need for international support and the activation of efforts to protect critically important facilities.
