186 Ukrainian Soldiers Returned from Captivity in Latest Prisoner Exchange, Zelenskyy Announces.
Ukrainian Troops Freed from Russian Captivity
According to UATV: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed on June 5, 2023—marking the 1,563rd day of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine—that 186 Ukrainian military personnel have been brought back from enemy captivity. This development represents the most recent installment in a series of ongoing prisoner swaps conducted amid the war.
Since the conflict began, seven exchange operations have been carried out over the past year, resulting in the return of 1,429 individuals. Commenting on the event, Zelenskyy stated:
“Today we continued the exchanges—another 186 of our people have come back home, to Ukraine.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He further emphasized that while the negotiations are challenging, they remain in progress: “The exchanges are difficult, but they are happening. We are preparing the next stages.”
Security Service of Ukraine Operations
Additionally, the president provided an update on the activities of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). “Today we received a briefing from the Security Service of Ukraine,” he said, highlighting the importance of accountability during wartime. Zelenskyy also expressed concern over Moscow’s actions, noting: “Unfortunately, the Russian side is once again choosing war.”
Notably, fighters from the SBU’s Special Operations Center 'A' have achieved significant results in striking enemy targets since the beginning of the year. This underscores the active role of Ukrainian forces in countering the aggressor and their critical contribution to national defense.
The return of these 186 troops marks a meaningful milestone in the context of ongoing exchanges and Ukraine’s continued efforts to secure the release of its citizens from captivity.
Prisoner swaps are a vital component of Ukraine’s wartime strategy, as they not only reunite families but also bolster national morale. Successful exchanges like this one reflect the government’s commitment to bringing its people home—a particularly urgent priority amid a protracted conflict. At the same time, the robust performance of the Security Service of Ukraine highlights the need for seamless coordination among state institutions to safeguard national security and effectively confront the adversary.
