Electric Vehicle Charging Costs Surpass Gas and Diesel in Ukraine.
Rising Electricity Prices Make EVs More Expensive to Run Than Fuel-Powered Cars
According to Novyny.live: In a significant shift, the cost of fast-charging electric vehicles in major Ukrainian cities has risen to 30-33 hryvnias per 1 kWh. This new pricing policy has made operating an EV more expensive than running a car with a diesel or gasoline engine, substantially increasing costs for electric vehicle owners. This development is particularly notable as many countries promote EV adoption for environmental reasons.
Record-high charging tariffs have been recorded in Kyiv, Dnipro, Poltava, and Zakarpattia, where prices range from 30 to 33 hryvnias per 1 kWh. In the capital, there are instances where charging reaches the maximum price of 33 UAH per 1 kWh. These new rates are causing concern among EV drivers as their refueling expenses have increased significantly.
Economic Analysis of the Costs
A cost breakdown reveals that with an average consumption of 25 kWh per 100 km, charging expenses now amount to 750 UAH. This sum is equivalent to 12.6 liters of diesel fuel for the same distance. When charging at the maximum price of 33 UAH per kWh, the cost per 100 km of travel equates to 13.8 liters of diesel, further highlighting the economic disadvantage of using electric vehicles under such high tariffs.
These changes in EV charging costs call into question their financial advantage compared to traditional gasoline or diesel cars. EV owners are facing new challenges that could influence their future vehicle choices.
The surge in electric vehicle charging prices could significantly impact the electric transport market in Ukraine. In a situation where electricity costs exceed those of conventional fuels, potential EV buyers may reconsider the wisdom of such an investment. This may lead to a slowdown in the transition to eco-friendly transport if measures are not taken to regulate tariffs or reduce charging costs.
