Zelenskyy Announces New Commander-in-Chief of Ukraine's Armed Forces: Who Replaces Syrskyi.
New Head of Ukraine's Armed Forces Appointed
According to Espreso.tv: President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has named Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi as the new Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This decision came alongside an offer to former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov for a different government role. The appointment follows public protests in support of Fedorov, triggered by tensions between him and the previous commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi.
On July 21, Zelenskyy met with Fedorov and proposed a 'worthy position in government that would unite the technological component of our state and ensure its development.' However, Fedorov declined the offer. That same day, he congratulated Major General Drapatyi on his new appointment.
Government Shifts and Public Demonstrations
Notably, the Verkhovna Rada voted to dismiss the Svyrydenko government on July 14, with Fedorov announcing his resignation the following day. These governmental changes came after an audit uncovered overspending of 300 billion UAH in the Ministry of Defense and the Armed Forces.
Protests supporting Fedorov took place on July 17, drawing over 10,000 people. Speaking at the rally, Fedorov stated:
'This is fresh air and new hope in the struggle of free people for freedom and justice'and added that 'we need to move even faster and write new chapters, correcting all previous mistakes.'
Zelenskyy had promised to make a decision regarding the military by July 19. The appointment of a new Commander-in-Chief and the reshuffling of the government will keep the situation in Ukraine under close scrutiny from both the public and experts.
These changes occur amid significant challenges for Ukraine's armed forces, especially given the ongoing military aggression. The protests in Fedorov's favor highlight the active role of civil society in the country's political processes. The actions of the new Commander-in-Chief and the government will likely have a major impact on Ukraine's defense effectiveness and strategic planning during the armed conflict.
