Signed Law on Ban of Russian Orthodox Church and Related Organizations in Ukraine

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky signed a law that bans the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) and related organizations in Ukraine. This was reported by "Khvylya" with reference to the official website of the Council.

The law was forwarded to Zelensky for signing on August 23, 2024, on the eve of Ukraine's Independence Day.

Once the law comes into effect, Ukrainian churches suspected of collaborating with the ROC are allowed 9 months to sever ties.

The bill provides for:

  • establishing restrictions for religious organizations that have ties with the ROC, which is banned in Ukraine;
  • defining the concept of "ties" with the ROC;
  • setting a period for Ukrainian organizations to terminate these ties;
  • determining the procedure for state control over the implementation of these requirements;
  • granting state authorities the power to interact with religious organizations that cannot or will not meet the requirements of the law independently.

Recall, the bill was supported by the Council on August 20.
