Zelenskyy gives Lukashenko a one-week deadline to dismantle equipment aiding Russia’s attacks on Ukraine.
Rising Tensions Between Ukraine and Belarus
According to UATV: On June 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy issued an ultimatum to Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko: remove or fully disable retransmission equipment in Belarus’s border regions within seven days. This equipment has been helping Russia launch attacks on Ukraine from Belarusian territory. The demand, made public on June 19, marks a significant escalation in the strained relations between the two countries. Earlier in May, Zelenskyy hosted Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya in Kyiv, signaling Ukraine’s support for the Belarusian people in their struggle against Lukashenko’s regime.
Zelenskyy’s move underscores Ukraine’s efforts to reduce the military threat emanating from Belarus. Meanwhile, in June, Lukashenko apologized to Zelenskyy for his earlier harsh remarks—a gesture that political analyst Franak Viačorka views as a diplomatic maneuver. According to Viačorka, Lukashenko lacks domestic backing and remains heavily reliant on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Diplomatic Efforts and New Challenges
Franak Viačorka noted that 'such a situation has never occurred before—where a Ukrainian president publicly and openly sets a deadline for Lukashenko to take action.'
He further remarked that 'Zelenskyy has essentially put this naked king in the spotlight,' highlighting Lukashenko’s vulnerability. Viačorka believes that 'Ukraine currently holds a significant advantage in the war and is leveraging it, including by helping Belarusian society weaken Lukashenko’s regime.' Therefore, he argues, 'the right tactic toward Lukashenko is to expose his weakness and apply pressure.'
Zelenskyy’s seven-day ultimatum could become a pivotal moment in Ukraine-Belarus relations and in the Belarusian people’s fight for democratic change. This step not only reflects the mounting tensions between the two nations but also underscores Ukraine’s role in supporting opposition forces in Belarus. The outcome may significantly influence future diplomatic and military developments in the region.
