Brussels Bound: Ukraine Seeks Tougher Sanctions at July 13 EU Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
EU Foreign Affairs Council to Discuss New Russia Sanctions and Ukraine Support
According to UATV: Ukraine is pressing the European Union to adopt a robust sanctions package against Russia that would intensify economic pressure. On July 10, 2023, Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha underscored the urgency of such measures, stating:
“I insist on effective sanctions packages that should make the ground burn economically under the Russians’ feet”- Andrii Sybiha.
In response, a meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council is scheduled for July 13, 2023, in Brussels. The session will be split into two segments:
- discussions on the return of Ukrainian hostages;
- political matters.
The minister also noted that
“of course, there will be discussions on strengthening our defense capabilities, energy issues ahead of winter, and the opening of clusters”- Andrii Sybiha.
Additionally, the council is expected to approve further sanctions against Russia, signaling the EU’s serious commitment to backing Ukraine in its fight to restore territorial integrity and sovereignty.
International Efforts to Bolster Ukraine
The planned EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting highlights a surge in international efforts to support Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The introduction of new sanctions could mark a critical step in ramping up economic pressure on Moscow while bolstering Ukraine’s economy—especially as the country prepares for the winter months. It also underscores the European Union’s solidarity with Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty and territorial integrity.
