Zelenskyy: Russia Pushes Wartime Elections to Destabilize Ukraine.
Statement by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that the push to hold elections during wartime originates from Russia, which seeks to destabilize Ukraine. In an interview with The Atlantic, he emphasized that discussions about holding a vote amid the ongoing conflict are rooted in Russian influence. Zelenskyy believes the Kremlin views elections as a tool to change power in Ukraine, revealing its intent to interfere in the country's internal affairs.
Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is preparing to hold a presidential election and a referendum on a peace agreement with Russia by May 15. This move is a response to a demand from the administration of former U.S. President Donald Trump, which insisted on ending the war by summer. The President noted:
"We are in a hurry to end the war" - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
Preparations for the elections are likely to be announced on February 24. Zelenskyy further remarked that "This is the easiest and fastest way to get rid of me," pointing to the complex and risky nature of holding a vote during war. He added, "I am ready" for any outcome, indicating his intention to continue fulfilling his presidential duties during this challenging period. The Ukrainian constitution currently prohibits elections under martial law, making any such move legally and logistically fraught.
The Critical Need for Stability and Security
President Zelenskyy's statement underscores the paramount importance of stability and security in Ukraine during the ongoing conflict. The question of holding elections at such a difficult time sparks significant debate, as it could profoundly impact the country's political landscape. While an election and referendum could be pivotal steps in the peace process, their implementation would require meticulous planning and guaranteed security to prevent destabilizing actions by external forces.
