At Munich Security Conference, Azerbaijan Pledges Energy Aid to Ukraine in Zelenskyy-Aliyev Meeting.
Presidential Meeting in Munich
According to UATV: On February 14, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on the sidelines of the 62nd Munich Security Conference. Their discussions centered on bilateral relations and energy support. As a result of the meeting, Azerbaijan committed a package of energy assistance to Ukraine, which included generators and transformers.
The Munich Security Conference, running from February 13 to 15, 2023, gathered approximately 50 heads of state and government. President Zelenskyy also delivered an address at the conference, emphasizing Ukraine's constructive approach to the peace process.
“Ukraine has always constructively supported efforts that can help achieve a just peace.” - Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He further highlighted the core reason for the war's continuation: “The sole reason the war is still ongoing is Russia's unwillingness to end it.” These statements underscore Ukraine's position in international politics and security, as well as the critical importance of support from international partners.
Energy Cooperation and Peace Efforts
The meeting between Zelenskyy and Aliyev signals a strengthening of energy security cooperation between Ukraine and Azerbaijan. This support is particularly vital as Ukraine works to repair its damaged infrastructure and reduce its historical energy dependence on Russia. The Munich conference is a key annual forum where global security challenges, including the war in Ukraine, are addressed by world leaders.
Zelenskyy's remarks on the peace process also reaffirm Ukraine's commitment to a diplomatic resolution of the conflict, despite the significant challenges it faces from ongoing Russian aggression.
