Statement from the North Atlantic Council on Cyber Threats

According to Espreso.tv: The North Atlantic Council has issued a statement expressing serious concern over cyber threats originating from Russia, while reaffirming the alliance's preparedness to take coordinated countermeasures. This declaration was approved during a recent session of the council, as reported by Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Russian-Linked Cyber Incidents

In March of this year, Russian hackers operating in the Netherlands attempted to compromise the Signal and WhatsApp accounts of government officials. These cybercriminal efforts prompted significant alarm among NATO member states. By April, the German government had flagged potential Russian involvement in phishing campaigns targeting Signal users. Further intrusion attempts emerged in May, with Russian cyber actors targeting the Signal account of Pina Picierno, Vice President of the European Parliament.

Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored that

Russia's malicious cyber activities directed against NATO member states constitute a violation of international law
. In response to these threats, alliance members have confirmed their readiness to take decisive joint action. Meanwhile, Ukraine—drawing on years of experience countering Russian aggression and hybrid threats—has expressed willingness to deepen cybersecurity cooperation with partners.

This statement reflects the growing unease among NATO countries regarding cyber threats emanating from Russia and highlights the urgent need for international collaboration to ensure cyber resilience. As malicious cyber operations intensify, with potentially severe consequences for national security, coordinated allied responses become increasingly critical. Ukraine, already well-versed in countering such threats, could serve as a valuable partner for NATO in developing effective defense strategies against cybercrime.
