Meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council

According to Espreso.tv: At a recent session of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, EU High Representative Kaja Kallas stressed the urgent need to intensify pressure on Russia to bring an end to the war and bolster support for Ukraine. She noted that intense discussions centered on a key demand: prioritizing the resolution of the conflict.

'We must be willing to endure short-term pain for long-term gain,' Kallas stated.

EU Sanctions Packages

This marks the second sanctions package that the EU has failed to approve on its first attempt. In February 2023, EU member state ambassadors could not reach consensus on the 20th sanctions package due to opposition from Slovakia. Earlier, Austria had blocked the 12th package over issues related to Raiffeisen Bank.

The European Commission introduced the 21st sanctions package on June 9, 2023, which included new restrictions in energy and finance, as well as a ban on entry into the EU for anyone who has served in the Russian armed forces since the start of the war.

Kallas underscored the importance of unified efforts to achieve peace in Ukraine, emphasizing that applying pressure on Russia is critical to ending the conflict.

This statement reflects the European Union's ongoing commitment to supporting Ukraine and countering Russian aggression. Repeated failures to adopt sanctions packages may point to internal divisions among member states that complicate collective action. The issue of sanctions remains pressing, as the EU's next steps could significantly influence the trajectory of the conflict and the broader regional situation.
