Government Funding Announced After Zelenskyy Visits Drone-Struck Kyiv Monastery.
Presidential Visit to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the historic Kyiv Pechersk Lavra on June 15, 2023, following a drone strike linked to Russian aggression. During the visit, he confirmed that two Russian drones had targeted this key site in the capital. In response, Ukraine's Cabinet of Ministers decided to allocate funds from the reserve budget to repair the damaged infrastructure.
Zelenskyy emphasized that steps would be taken to restore the monastery.
“Everything will be done. The Minister of Culture is here. Appropriate measures will be taken, expert assessments will be conducted, and we will restore everything,”he stated during his visit. He also stressed the need for a strong international response to the attack, saying,
“It is crucial that the world does not stay silent in the face of this latest Russian barbarism. Their strike on the Lavra is an attack on the Christian community and on humanity's cultural heritage.”
Global Response and Restoration Priorities
Zelenskyy instructed Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic team to intensify engagement with international partners.
“I have instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and our entire diplomatic team to maximize all contacts with partners today so that international events this week and next deliver real results—strengthening our defense and increasing global pressure on Russia for this war,”the president emphasized.
This assault on the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra underscores the ongoing threat from Russia, which endangers not only national security but also Ukraine's cultural heritage. Restoring the Lavra will be a vital step in preserving this historic landmark.
The attack highlights how vulnerable cultural sites become during wartime and reinforces the importance of protecting them to maintain national identity. By ramping up diplomatic outreach, as the president urged, Ukraine aims to draw global attention to the situation and secure additional support in countering aggression.
