Europe must build its own shield against Russian ballistic missiles, Zelensky urges.
Call for a European missile defense system
According to UATV: Speaking at a defense forum in Ankara on July 7, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on Europe to develop its own independent system to counter ballistic missile threats from Russia. He stressed the urgent need for robust defensive mechanisms to safeguard the continent amid escalating Russian aggression.
“The one thing we still have to accomplish here, in Europe, is to create a reliable defense against Russia’s ballistic missiles.” — Volodymyr Zelensky
Zelensky’s remarks highlight a critical gap in Europe’s current defense capabilities. While acknowledging the value of existing systems like the Patriot, he noted: 'We all highly value the Patriot system—it is excellent—but current production levels are insufficient to meet the growing demand for ballistic missile protection.'
Need for collective action
The Ukrainian leader’s address emphasized that strengthening Europe’s security requires a unified, collaborative approach to adapt to new threats posed by Russia’s aggressive policies. Establishing a dedicated ballistic missile defense system would mark a major step toward reinforcing the region’s overall deterrence and resilience.
Zelensky’s appeal underscores the pressing security challenges Europe faces as the military threat from Russia intensifies. This initiative could drive European nations toward deeper defense cooperation, recognizing that synergy is essential for ensuring stability and safety in the region. With existing systems unable to fully meet current needs, discussions on new protective frameworks have become increasingly vital.
